SDG 2: Zero Hunger

At Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD), financial aid is pivotal in ensuring that students from diverse backgrounds can access and benefit from its esteemed educational programs. The university offers a range of financial support options, including merit-based and need-based scholarships, as well as grants and student loans. Sorbonne’s scholarships aim to recognize and support exceptional talent and academic achievement, while its grants are designed to assist those facing financial challenges. By offering these forms of financial assistance, SUAD strives to reduce the financial barriers to education, helping students focus on their studies and contribute to the university’s rich academic community.

Initiatives

Food Waste Management Practices

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is committed to reducing pre and post food waste through a number of means including inventory management of suppliers to the university, applying appropriate food storage policy implementation, and conducting composting on site which has resulted in a reduction of 30% of food waste.

Sustainable Food Initiatives

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is committed to providing sustainable food choices for everyone on campus. Its offerings include a variety of vegetarian and vegan options, as well as healthy and affordable meals. By prioritizing local sourcing and environmentally friendly practices, the aim is to promote sustainability and ensure that all members of the community have access to nutritious food.

SUAD’s Local farm

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi’s facility management company, SERCO, established a local farm on site in 2014 to produce fresh vegetables and fruits, promoting sustainability and support for its community. This initiative provides nutritious, organic grown produce to university workers while integrating sustainable farming practices. By prioritizing local sourcing, the university enhances its commitment to environmental sustainability and fosters a culture of health and wellness among its working staff, reinforcing its dedication to creating a resilient food system.

Events and Conferences

The Alumni “RED CARPET, GREEN HEARTS” Gala Dinner

The first Alumni Gala Dinner held in 2023 on campus focused on and highlighted the University’s commitment to sustainability. For the occasion, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administrative Affairs, Dr Majed Al Khmeiri, who holds a PHD on “Strategic Planning and Sustainable Development: The Future of the United Arab Emirates”, from Sorbonne Université Paris, welcomed the guests and spoke on the importance of sustainability and the role of the UAE.

The Gala Dinner was an environmentally friendly occasion where all equipment used was sustainable.

The Career Centre opted for a zero-waste buffet, led lighting and zero printing. They also engaged the Alumni community in raising awareness about climate change by offering sustainable prizes including a stay at an eco-resort.

Ramadan meal boxes for SUAD’s worker staff

During the holy month of Ramadan each year, students carry out a meaningful initiative by donating meal boxes to the hardworking service staff at the university, emphasizing the spirit of generosity and community support that characterizes the holy month. Understanding that many workers often miss out on traditional iftar meals due to their demanding schedules, the university student community comes together annually to prepare and distribute these meal boxes. Students collaborate to gather donations, and pack the boxes, ensuring that each one is a thoughtful gesture of appreciation. This initiative not only provides a warm meal to those who contribute daily to the university’s success but also fosters a sense of unity and gratitude, embodying the essence of Ramadan through acts of kindness and compassion.
